Soluble fiber, in particular, is well-studied: it forms a gel-like substance in the gut, which slows digestion and absorption of nutrients, including fats and sugars. This process indirectly reduces hepatic triglyceride production by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing postprandial lipid absorption.
Clinical trials and meta-analyses consistently show that regular consumption of soluble fiber (10–25 grams per day) can lead to modest but significant reductions in blood triglyceride concentrations, especially in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia or metabolic syndrome. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that soluble fiber supplementation resulted in significant reductions in serum triglycerides compared to control groups. The effect size is generally moderate but clinically meaningful, especially when combined with other lifestyle interventions.
While the primary cardiovascular benefit of fiber is typically its LDL cholesterol-lowering effect, the triglyceride-lowering action is recognized in scientific literature and reflected in clinical guidelines.
