Epigallocatechin, particularly in the form of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found in green tea, has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have found that green tea catechins may contribute to modest reductions in serum triglycerides in adults, particularly when combined with caffeine. The proposed mechanisms include increased fat oxidation, reduced intestinal lipid absorption, and enhanced expression of genes related to lipid metabolism.

For example, a 2011 meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that green tea catechin supplementation led to significant, but modest, reductions in serum triglyceride concentrations. Another meta-analysis in 2020 in Phytotherapy Research also supported these findings, though the magnitude of the effect was generally small and most pronounced in people with metabolic syndrome or overweight individuals.

It is important to note, however, that while studies suggest a positive effect, the changes in triglyceride levels are usually modest and may not be clinically significant for individuals with very high triglycerides. The evidence quality is moderate, with some heterogeneity among studies in terms of dosage, duration, and participant characteristics. Overall, EGCG and green tea extracts are considered supportive but not primary therapies for lowering triglycerides.
