Ecklonia is a genus of brown seaweed, with Ecklonia cava being the most frequently studied species. Several preclinical and a few small clinical studies suggest that extracts from Ecklonia species may have lipid-lowering effects, including on triglyceride levels. The primary active compounds are phlorotannins, a class of polyphenols unique to brown algae, which are thought to exert antioxidant and metabolic benefits.

Animal studies have shown that Ecklonia cava extracts can reduce serum triglyceride levels, likely by inhibiting lipid absorption and modulating enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. Some small human trials suggest beneficial effects: for example, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in overweight adults reported significant reductions in triglycerides after 12 weeks of supplementation with Ecklonia cava phlorotannin extract. However, these studies are generally small, of short duration, and sometimes funded by manufacturers. There is insufficient large-scale, long-term clinical evidence to conclusively establish efficacy.

While traditional use of Ecklonia in East Asian countries focuses mainly on general health, blood circulation, and antioxidant purposes, its specific application to hypertriglyceridemia is driven primarily by emerging scientific research rather than historical precedent. The current evidence base is promising but preliminary, and larger, independent clinical trials are needed to confirm the effects and establish optimal dosing and safety.
