Diosgenin is a naturally occurring steroidal saponin found primarily in wild yam (Dioscorea species). There is some scientific evidence suggesting its potential to support or lower high triglyceride levels, primarily based on preclinical (animal and cell) studies. Several studies in rodents have demonstrated that diosgenin supplementation can lead to significant reductions in serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of lipid metabolism enzymes, enhancement of bile acid synthesis, and upregulation of LDL receptor activity in the liver. For example, a study published in the journal Lipids (2005) observed that diosgenin administration in hyperlipidemic rats significantly reduced triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations compared to controls.

However, robust clinical evidence in humans is currently lacking. Most studies are limited to animal experiments or in vitro work, and there are no large, well-controlled human trials assessing the efficacy of diosgenin for lowering triglycerides. Therefore, while the mechanistic rationale and preclinical results are promising, evidence supporting diosgenin for high triglycerides in humans remains preliminary. As such, diosgenin's use for this purpose is justified primarily by early scientific research rather than traditional use or strong clinical validation.
