Coleus forskohlii is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, but its application for high triglycerides is based more on recent scientific investigation rather than historical use. The active compound, forskolin, is known to activate adenylate cyclase and influence cellular cAMP levels, which has downstream effects on lipid metabolism.

Several small human clinical studies and animal experiments have examined the effects of Coleus forskohlii extract or forskolin on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. In a few randomized controlled trials, supplementation with Coleus forskohlii extract has shown modest reductions in serum triglyceride levels, sometimes alongside improvements in other lipid parameters like total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and varying extract standardizations. A 2014 study (Obesity Research & Clinical Practice) found a significant decrease in triglyceride levels in overweight men taking forskolin compared to placebo. Animal studies also suggest a potential benefit, possibly through increased lipolysis and fat metabolism.

Despite these positive findings, the evidence is still preliminary and inconsistent. The overall quality and quantity of research supporting the use of Coleus forskohlii for high triglycerides is low to moderate, and larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish safety profiles. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence, Coleus forskohlii cannot be considered a robust or primary therapy for hypertriglyceridemia at this time.
