Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus maxima
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citrus maxima (pomelo) has been investigated in several animal and limited human studies for its effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Some research suggests that extracts from the fruit, peel, or juice may help reduce serum triglycerides. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, modulation of lipid absorption, and improvement of hepatic lipid metabolism, likely attributable to flavonoids such as naringin and other polyphenolic compounds found in the fruit.
For example, a study on hyperlipidemic rats demonstrated that Citrus maxima peel extract significantly lowered triglyceride levels compared to controls. In limited human studies, consumption of pomelo fruit or juice has been associated with modest reductions in triglycerides, though the sample sizes are small and methodologies vary. There is also evidence from in vitro studies indicating inhibition of pancreatic lipase, which could decrease fat absorption and contribute to lower triglyceride levels.
Overall, while some scientific evidence supports the triglyceride-lowering effect of Citrus maxima, most studies are preclinical or small-scale clinical trials. There is a need for larger, well-controlled human studies to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosing. Therefore, the evidence is preliminary but promising, justifying a moderate rating.
