Evidence supporting the use of: Choline
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Choline is an essential nutrient involved in several physiological processes, including lipid metabolism and liver function. Its role in supporting or treating high triglycerides is supported by some scientific evidence, though the strength of this evidence is moderate rather than strong. Choline is a precursor for the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a key component of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles that are responsible for exporting triglycerides from the liver to the bloodstream. Inadequate choline intake can lead to impaired VLDL synthesis, resulting in the accumulation of triglycerides in the liver, which may contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and elevated blood triglyceride levels. Several clinical and animal studies have shown that choline supplementation can reduce liver fat accumulation and improve lipid profiles, particularly in individuals with choline deficiency. For example, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that choline supplementation prevented liver dysfunction and abnormal lipid metabolism in healthy adults fed a low-choline diet. However, the direct effect of choline on lowering elevated blood triglyceride levels in the general population is less well established, and larger, well-controlled trials are needed. In summary, choline’s use for high triglycerides is scientifically plausible based on its role in lipid metabolism and evidence from deficiency studies, but its efficacy as a standalone treatment for high triglycerides in those without deficiency is not yet robustly established.
