Chitin-glucan is a natural polysaccharide extracted from the cell walls of fungi such as Aspergillus niger. It has been investigated for its potential benefits on lipid metabolism, including the reduction of elevated triglyceride levels. Scientific support for its effect on triglycerides is emerging but remains limited. The most notable evidence comes from a few small, randomized controlled trials and preclinical studies. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2013 (European Journal of Nutrition) found that supplementation with chitin-glucan (4.5 g/day for 6 weeks) led to a modest but statistically significant decrease in triglyceride levels in overweight and obese adults compared to placebo. Mechanistically, chitin-glucan is thought to act as a prebiotic fiber, modulating gut microbiota and binding bile acids, which may influence lipid absorption and metabolism.

Despite these findings, the number of human studies is small, and most trials have been short in duration and used relatively small sample sizes. No major clinical guidelines currently recommend chitin-glucan for triglyceride management. Therefore, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting potential benefit, it is not robust or widely validated at this time.
