Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) are notably rich in selenium, a trace mineral with important antioxidant properties. There is some scientific interest in the impact of selenium and Brazil nut consumption on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Several small clinical studies have examined Brazil nut supplementation in humans. For instance, a randomized trial in mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects found that consumption of Brazil nuts improved some lipid parameters, particularly increasing HDL cholesterol, but showed inconsistent or modest effects on triglyceride levels. Other research has suggested that selenium supplementation can influence antioxidant status and inflammation, which are indirectly linked to lipid metabolism, but direct and consistent triglyceride-lowering effects are not well established.

Traditional medicine systems in South America have used Brazil nuts primarily for their nutritional value rather than as a specific remedy for hypertriglyceridemia. While Brazil nuts are nutrient-dense and may offer cardiovascular benefits due to their selenium, healthy fats, and polyphenol content, the direct evidence supporting their use specifically for lowering high triglycerides remains limited and is not robust. Most authoritative reviews and meta-analyses conclude that while Brazil nuts may mildly improve some cardiovascular risk factors, their effect on triglycerides is modest at best. Therefore, scientific evidence exists but is limited in quality and scope.
