Blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) have been studied for their potential effects on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels, primarily due to their high content of polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins. Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies suggest that blueberry supplementation may have a modest beneficial effect on lowering triglycerides, especially in individuals with metabolic syndrome or other cardiovascular risk factors. For example, a 2019 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) found that daily intake of freeze-dried blueberry powder (equivalent to about 1 cup of fresh blueberries) for six months resulted in improvements in some lipid parameters, but the effect on triglycerides was modest and not always statistically significant.

Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show that while blueberries and anthocyanin-rich foods may have a beneficial impact on cholesterol and other lipid fractions, the evidence for a substantial reduction in triglyceride levels is limited and inconsistent. Animal studies generally show more pronounced effects than human studies. The mechanism is thought to involve improved insulin sensitivity, antioxidant effects, and modulation of lipid metabolism.
