Beta-glucan, a soluble fiber found primarily in oats and barley, has been studied for its effects on lipid profiles, particularly cholesterol. While its cholesterol-lowering properties are well established, there is also some scientific evidence suggesting that beta-glucan may help reduce elevated triglyceride levels. The mechanism is thought to involve delayed gastric emptying and reduced absorption of dietary fat, as well as modulation of bile acid metabolism.

Several clinical trials have investigated the impact of beta-glucan consumption on triglycerides. Meta-analyses, such as the one published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2011), indicate that while beta-glucan has a more pronounced effect on LDL cholesterol, it may also lead to modest reductions in triglyceride levels, particularly in individuals with hyperlipidemia. The effect size is generally small, often in the range of 5-10% reduction, and appears to be dose-dependent, with most benefits observed at intakes of at least 3 grams per day.

Beta-glucan is recognized by health authorities such as the FDA and EFSA for its cholesterol-lowering effects, but it is less commonly promoted specifically for triglyceride reduction. Nonetheless, its overall impact on lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk factors gives it a supportive role. The evidence is not as robust as for cholesterol, but dietary inclusion of beta-glucan is considered a low-risk, potentially beneficial strategy for those with elevated triglycerides.
