Astragaloside, a key active compound extracted from Astragalus membranaceus, has been investigated for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several preclinical studies, primarily in animal models, suggest that Astragaloside IV may help reduce elevated triglycerides. Proposed mechanisms include the modulation of lipid metabolism-related genes and improvement of insulin sensitivity, which can indirectly affect triglyceride synthesis and breakdown.
For instance, animal studies have shown that Astragaloside IV can decrease serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels in high-fat diet-induced models of hyperlipidemia. The compound appears to regulate the expression of key enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthase, and may also exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects that benefit overall metabolic health.
However, robust human clinical trial data are lacking. The majority of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, and while these findings are promising, they are not sufficient to establish Astragaloside as a proven therapy for high triglycerides in humans. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the overall strength of evidence supporting its use for this specific purpose is still limited and further clinical research is required.
