Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) has been studied for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including triglyceride levels. Several small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that ALA supplementation may help lower triglyceride levels, particularly in individuals with metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes. The proposed mechanisms include improved insulin sensitivity, reduction in oxidative stress, and modulation of lipid metabolism enzymes. For example, a 2011 randomized controlled trial found that ALA supplementation (600 mg/day) for 12 weeks significantly reduced triglyceride levels in patients with metabolic syndrome compared to placebo. Other studies have reported similar, though sometimes modest, effects. However, the number of large, high-quality trials is limited, and meta-analyses indicate that while there may be a beneficial effect, the magnitude is generally small and the evidence is not yet robust enough to warrant routine clinical use specifically for hypertriglyceridemia. Most guidelines do not formally recommend ALA for lowering triglycerides due to insufficient evidence. In summary, while there is some scientific support for ALA’s use in this context, the evidence quality is moderate and more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and establish optimal dosing.
