Alpha-cyclodextrin is a soluble dietary fiber derived from starch and has been studied for its ability to modulate lipid metabolism, including its effects on triglyceride levels. Several randomized controlled trials have investigated its impact on postprandial (after meal) triglyceride excursions. For example, a 2017 double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Lipids in Health and Disease found that oral administration of alpha-cyclodextrin with a fat-containing meal significantly reduced the rise in postprandial triglycerides in healthy adults compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism is that alpha-cyclodextrin can bind dietary fat in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing fat absorption and subsequent triglyceride formation. A meta-analysis published in 2018 in the Journal of Functional Foods concluded that alpha-cyclodextrin supplementation can reduce postprandial triglyceride responses, though the effect on fasting triglyceride levels is not well established. The U.S. FDA has also acknowledged alpha-cyclodextrin as a dietary fiber with potential benefits in modulating blood lipid levels. Despite these promising findings, the body of evidence is still relatively limited, with most studies focusing on postprandial rather than chronic triglyceride management, and often involving small sample sizes. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm benefits for individuals with persistently high triglycerides. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation for its use, the evidence is moderate and primarily supports short-term or meal-related reductions in triglyceride levels.
