Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Algal oil is primarily used as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and sometimes eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There is scientific evidence supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acids for the management of elevated triglycerides. Numerous clinical studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation, especially EPA and DHA, can significantly lower triglyceride levels in individuals with hypertriglyceridemia. Algal oil is a plant-based, sustainable alternative to fish oil, and studies have shown that it is effective in raising plasma levels of DHA and, to a lesser extent, EPA.

Recent randomized controlled trials have found that algal oil supplementation can reduce triglyceride levels in both healthy adults and those with elevated triglycerides, with efficacy similar to that of fish-derived omega-3 supplements. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunct to diet to reduce triglycerides in adults with very high levels, though most prescription products are fish-derived. Algal oil provides a vegan source of these beneficial fatty acids, making it suitable for those who avoid animal products.

While evidence specifically on algal oil is less extensive than for fish oil, the biochemical equivalence of algal-derived omega-3s supports its use. Thus, the use of algal oil to lower high triglycerides is scientifically validated, and its effectiveness is supported by moderate to strong evidence.
