Evidence supporting the use of: Adzuki bean
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Adzuki beans (Vigna angularis) have been investigated in scientific studies for their potential role in improving lipid profiles, including lowering triglyceride levels. Several animal studies have demonstrated that adzuki bean extracts or diets supplemented with adzuki beans can lead to significant reductions in serum triglyceride concentrations. For example, research in rats fed high-fat diets supplemented with adzuki bean extract showed improvements in lipid metabolism, including lower triglycerides and improved hepatic fat accumulation. The proposed mechanisms include increased expression of genes involved in lipid oxidation and decreased synthesis of fatty acids in the liver, as well as the presence of polyphenols and dietary fiber in adzuki beans that may influence lipid absorption and metabolism.
However, human data are limited. A few small clinical studies have evaluated the effects of adzuki bean consumption on lipid profiles in humans, with some reporting modest decreases in triglycerides, but the results are not robust or consistent across studies. Most available evidence is preclinical or observational, which limits the strength of the conclusions that can be drawn. Thus, while there is early scientific interest and some supportive animal data, the evidence in humans is insufficient to recommend adzuki beans as a primary intervention for high triglycerides. Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and elucidate the mechanisms involved.
