Undeca-2E,7Z,9E-trienoic acid isobutylamide is one of the principal alkamides found in Echinacea species, particularly Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea. Historically, Native American tribes and early American herbalists used Echinacea roots and preparations to alleviate toothache and other orofacial pains. The traditional use is well documented in ethnobotanical literature, where Echinacea root poultices or chewed root were applied directly to the site of tooth pain for symptomatic relief. These practices were later adopted by eclectic physicians in the 19th and early 20th centuries in North America.

Scientific validation for this specific use is limited. Alkamides such as undeca-2E,7Z,9E-trienoic acid isobutylamide have been shown in vitro to possess local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties, which could plausibly contribute to reductions in pain or swelling. However, there are no modern clinical trials or robust scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of this compound, or Echinacea preparations containing it, for toothache specifically.
