Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its use for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders is primarily based on its traditional reputation for reducing stress, muscle tension, and inflammation, which are all factors that can contribute to TMJ symptoms. In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is considered a "rasayana" or rejuvenating herb, often prescribed for musculoskeletal pain, anxiety, and general stress—all of which may indirectly benefit people suffering from TMJ dysfunction by addressing underlying stress and tension that can exacerbate jaw pain and muscle tightness. However, there is little direct historical or textual evidence in Ayurvedic literature specifically linking ashwagandha to TMJ treatment.

Scientific studies on ashwagandha have shown it can reduce markers of inflammation and lower perceived stress, but there are no robust clinical trials directly evaluating its efficacy for TMJ disorders. The rationale for its use in TMJ is extrapolated from benefits observed in stress reduction and in conditions involving muscle pain or inflammation. Therefore, while ashwagandha’s use for TMJ is rooted in tradition and some plausible mechanisms, direct evidence for this specific application remains weak, and recommendations are generally based on its broader traditional uses rather than disease-specific data.
