Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus plantarum
For the health condition: Thrush
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential role in supporting or treating thrush (oral or vaginal candidiasis), a condition commonly caused by an overgrowth of Candida species. The rationale for its use is based on its ability to restore and maintain a healthy balance of microflora in the mucosal tissues, thereby inhibiting the overgrowth of pathogenic fungi like Candida albicans.
Several in vitro studies and some small-scale clinical trials suggest that L. plantarum can inhibit the growth of Candida through competitive exclusion, production of lactic acid, and secretion of antimicrobial substances. For example, a few randomized trials have investigated the use of L. plantarum in combination with other probiotic strains for the prevention or adjunctive treatment of vaginal candidiasis. Some studies report a reduction in recurrence rates and symptom severity, although the research often involves mixed probiotic formulations rather than L. plantarum alone.
Despite these promising findings, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are limited, and there is variability in probiotic strains, dosages, and treatment protocols used. Therefore, while scientific evidence exists to justify the use of L. plantarum for thrush, it is not yet definitive or universally accepted in clinical guidelines. The evidence is stronger than mere tradition but does not yet reach the highest level of scientific validation.
