For the health condition: Testosterone (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rhaponticum carthamoides (commonly known as Maral root or Leuzea) has a long history of traditional use in Russian and Eastern European herbal medicine, particularly as a tonic to enhance physical performance, stamina, and recovery. Its reputation as an adaptogen has led to its inclusion in folk remedies purported to support male vitality and sexual health, including the notion of boosting testosterone or alleviating symptoms associated with low testosterone. The root contains ecdysteroids, such as 20-hydroxyecdysone, which are plant-derived steroid-like compounds. Some animal studies and very limited human data suggest ecdysteroids may have anabolic effects, but direct evidence for a testosterone-boosting action in humans is lacking. There are no robust clinical trials showing that Rhaponticum carthamoides reliably increases testosterone levels or treats hypogonadism in men. Its use for this purpose is thus primarily based on traditional practice and extrapolation from its adaptogenic and performance-enhancing claims, rather than on clear scientific validation. More research is needed to establish any specific hormone-modulating effects in humans.
