Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Massularia acuminata is primarily used to support testosterone levels based on traditional medicine practices in West Africa, where it is known as "chewing stick" and is popularly believed to enhance male sexual function and vitality. The traditional use includes chewing the stem or root as an aphrodisiac and tonic for male reproductive health. Scientific studies on Massularia acuminata are limited, but a few animal studies provide preliminary evidence. For instance, some rat studies have indicated that extracts of Massularia acuminata may increase serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone levels, potentially through the stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. However, these studies are not extensive, lack human trials, and often do not clarify the mechanisms or safety over long-term use. There are no robust clinical trials in humans validating its efficacy or safety for treating low testosterone. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains preliminary and limited to animal models.
