Macaenes are compounds found in maca (Lepidium meyenii), a plant native to the Andes of Peru. Maca has a long history of traditional use as an energy and fertility enhancer, particularly among indigenous populations in South America. While maca is not part of traditional medical systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurveda, its use in Andean folk medicine includes claims of supporting libido, sexual function, and overall vitality in both men and women. Scientific studies on maca and its specific compounds, including macaenes, have produced mixed results. Some small-scale human studies and animal research suggest that maca supplementation may have a positive effect on sexual desire and may modestly improve certain markers associated with sexual health. However, current evidence does not strongly support a direct or clinically significant increase in testosterone levels in men. Most studies show no change in serum testosterone, suggesting that any benefits to sexual health are likely mediated by other mechanisms. There is also a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials specifically isolating macaenes as the active component responsible for these effects. Thus, maca (and by extension, macaenes) is primarily used for low testosterone based on traditional use and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific evidence.
