Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginseng, particularly Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Korean traditional medicine, where it is believed to support male vitality, energy, and sexual function. These traditional uses often extend to claims of enhancing libido and improving symptoms that may be associated with low testosterone, such as fatigue and reduced sexual performance. However, direct references to the use of ginseng for the explicit treatment of "low testosterone" are less common in the historical record, with most traditions speaking more broadly about "restoring yang" or "tonifying male essence."

Scientific studies investigating the effects of ginseng on testosterone in humans are limited and results have been mixed. Some animal studies have shown that certain ginsenosides (the active compounds in ginseng) may influence testosterone production or regulation. A few small clinical trials in humans have suggested mild improvements in some markers of sexual function or hormone balance, but these studies are typically low in quality, with small sample sizes and sometimes conflicting results regarding actual increases in serum testosterone levels. As of now, there is not strong scientific evidence to support ginseng as an effective treatment for clinically low testosterone, but its traditional use in this context is well established.
