Evidence supporting the use of: Furostanols
For the health condition: Testosterone (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Furostanols are a class of steroidal saponins found in certain plants, most notably in Tribulus terrestris. Their traditional use, especially in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, is associated with enhancing male virility, libido, and supporting testosterone-related functions. The traditional rationale is based on observations of increased vitality, improved sexual performance, and anecdotal reports of benefits in men with symptoms of low testosterone.
Despite widespread use, scientific validation for furostanols’ direct effect on testosterone levels in humans remains limited. Some animal studies and in vitro research have suggested that furostanol glycosides can stimulate androgen production or improve sexual function. However, clinical trials in humans are few and often yield inconsistent or marginal results. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that, while Tribulus terrestris and its furostanol constituents may slightly improve certain aspects of sexual function, there is insufficient evidence to confirm a significant or reliable increase in testosterone levels in men with clinically low testosterone.
In summary, the use of furostanols for supporting or treating low testosterone is grounded more in tradition than in robust scientific evidence. The current rating reflects that while there is a long history of use and some preliminary animal data, rigorous human studies demonstrating clear efficacy are lacking.
