Evidence supporting the use of: Butea superba
For the health condition: Testosterone (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Butea superba is a herb traditionally used in Thai medicine, particularly as an aphrodisiac and male tonic. Its use for supporting or treating low testosterone is primarily based on its historical reputation for enhancing male vitality and sexual performance. Traditional healers in Thailand have long prescribed it for erectile dysfunction and general male vigor, believing it to have androgenic properties. Scientific investigation into Butea superba’s effects on testosterone is limited and inconclusive. Some small-scale animal studies and in vitro experiments have suggested that extracts of Butea superba may have androgenic effects or may increase testosterone levels. However, results are inconsistent and human clinical trials are scarce. A few small clinical studies have reported improvements in sexual function, but not consistently on testosterone levels. Additionally, there have been some concerns about possible adverse effects, including cases of gynecomastia and changes in liver function in isolated case reports. Overall, the use of Butea superba for low testosterone is rooted in tradition, with modest supporting evidence from early-stage research, but there is currently insufficient high-quality scientific validation to confirm its efficacy for this specific condition.
