Evidence supporting the use of: Antler
For the health condition: Testosterone (low)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler, particularly deer antler velvet, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a tonic for vitality, strength, and overall male health. Traditionally, it is believed to support virility and enhance male sexual function, which is sometimes associated with testosterone or androgenic effects. However, modern scientific studies investigating antler velvet's impact on testosterone levels are limited and generally inconclusive. Some animal studies suggest minor effects on testosterone or related hormones, but these findings have not been robustly replicated in human trials. Most clinical evidence is either anecdotal or of low methodological quality, with small sample sizes and lack of proper controls. Thus, while antler is used traditionally for conditions possibly linked to testosterone, direct scientific validation for its efficacy in treating low testosterone is lacking. Currently, its use is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence.
