Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine as a general adaptogen, but its use for supporting testosterone levels in men has more recently been investigated in scientific studies. Several randomized controlled trials have found that ashwagandha supplementation may lead to modest increases in testosterone levels, particularly in men experiencing infertility, stress, or undergoing resistance training. For example, a 2015 study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that men who took ashwagandha root extract during a resistance training program experienced greater increases in testosterone and muscle strength compared to placebo. Another study published in Fertility and Sterility (2010) reported improved semen quality and increased testosterone in infertile men who took ashwagandha. However, while these results are promising, the overall body of evidence is still limited, and most studies have small sample sizes and short durations. The mechanism is thought to involve ashwagandha’s ability to reduce stress and cortisol levels, which can indirectly support healthy testosterone production. In summary, there is emerging scientific evidence suggesting that ashwagandha may support testosterone levels, but larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm these effects and to establish optimal dosing and safety.
