Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a “rasayana” or rejuvenator, and part of its reputation includes supporting male reproductive health. Modern scientific research has investigated its effects on the testes and male fertility. Several clinical studies have examined ashwagandha’s impact on male hormone levels, sperm parameters, and overall reproductive function. For instance, a randomized placebo-controlled study published in 2010 found that ashwagandha root extract improved sperm count, motility, and semen volume in infertile men, while also reducing oxidative stress markers (PubMed 20213891). Other studies have reported increased testosterone levels and improved reproductive hormone profiles in men using ashwagandha supplements (PubMed 24559811). Mechanistically, ashwagandha’s antioxidant and adaptogenic properties are thought to protect testicular cells from damage and support hormonal balance. While most studies are small and more research is needed to confirm these findings and elucidate long-term safety, the available evidence suggests a moderate scientific basis for ashwagandha’s use in supporting testicular function and male reproductive health.
