Apigenin is a natural flavonoid found in various plants, including parsley, chamomile, and celery. In recent years, it has been investigated for its potential benefits on male reproductive health, specifically relating to the testes. Scientific interest is primarily based on preclinical (animal and in vitro) studies, which suggest that apigenin may support testosterone production and protect against testicular oxidative stress.
Several rodent studies have demonstrated that apigenin supplementation can increase testosterone levels, possibly by enhancing the expression of steroidogenic enzymes like StAR (Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory protein) in the testes. Additionally, its antioxidant properties appear to protect testicular tissue from damage caused by oxidative stress, which is implicated in various forms of testicular dysfunction. For example, a 2017 study in Andrologia showed that apigenin ameliorated testicular toxicity and improved sperm parameters in rats exposed to toxins.
Despite these promising preclinical findings, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans to confirm effectiveness or safety for supporting testicular health or testosterone production. As such, while scientific rationale exists and animal data are supportive, the evidence remains preliminary and does not justify strong clinical recommendations.
