Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Teasel (most commonly referring to Dipsacus fullonum or Dipsacus asper) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Chinese and European herbal systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), teasel root (known as Xu Duan, Dipsacus asper) is used to "tonify the liver and kidneys, strengthen bones and tendons, and promote the healing of sinews." This has led to its use for musculoskeletal complaints, including tendonitis, fractures, and lower back pain. Similarly, some European folk herbalists have used teasel preparations for joint and connective tissue discomfort, though documentation is less robust than in TCM.

Despite its traditional uses, there is very limited scientific research directly supporting teasel for tendonitis. No clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have confirmed its efficacy for this condition. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical texts. The use of teasel for tendon or connective tissue problems persists primarily within the context of tradition rather than modern medical validation. Therefore, while teasel is indeed used in some herbal practices to support tendon and connective tissue health, this use is justified by tradition, not by scientific evidence.
