For the health condition: Tendonitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is believed in TCM to nourish the kidneys, strengthen bones and tendons, and support "yang" energy. Within this framework, antler horn has been used to treat conditions associated with weakness or injury of musculoskeletal tissues, including tendonitis. However, the rationale is based on traditional energetic concepts rather than modern scientific evidence.
From a scientific perspective, there is limited research on the efficacy of antler horn for tendonitis. Some animal and in vitro studies have examined the effects of deer antler velvet extracts, showing potential anti-inflammatory or growth factor-stimulating properties, but these studies are preliminary and do not specifically address tendon healing or tendonitis in humans. Furthermore, systematic reviews and clinical trials directly supporting its use for tendonitis are lacking. Overall, while antler horn is traditionally used for tendon and joint issues in some cultures, its use is not supported by strong scientific evidence for the treatment of tendonitis.
