Vitamin K, particularly in its K2 form (menaquinone), has garnered scientific interest for its role in dental health. Research indicates that vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin and matrix Gla-protein, two proteins essential for calcium metabolism and the prevention of inappropriate calcification. In the context of teeth, this means that vitamin K2 may help direct calcium to the bones and teeth where it is needed, rather than allowing it to deposit in soft tissues. Some observational and animal studies have suggested that adequate vitamin K2 intake is associated with improved dental health and reduced risk of dental caries, largely by supporting remineralization and inhibiting demineralization of tooth enamel.
Historically, traditional diets documented by Dr. Weston A. Price in the early 20th century were rich in vitamin K2 and correlated with excellent dental health among various populations. However, direct clinical trials in humans specifically exploring vitamin K’s effect on teeth are limited. Most of the evidence comes from biochemical understanding and extrapolation from animal studies.
