Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC) is a substance derived from bovine bone that contains calcium, phosphorus, protein matrix, and trace minerals, closely resembling the natural composition of human bone and teeth. MCHC has been used as a dietary supplement to support bone and dental health. The rationale for its use in supporting the teeth is primarily based on its chemical similarity to the hydroxyapatite mineral that forms the bulk of both bone and dental enamel. Several clinical and laboratory studies indicate that hydroxyapatite, including MCHC and synthetic forms, can help remineralize dental enamel and reduce sensitivity when applied topically (as in toothpaste). However, most of the evidence for oral supplementation with MCHC revolves around bone health, with only limited direct research on its effects on teeth when taken orally. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that hydroxyapatite particles can integrate into enamel and dentin, potentially aiding in repair and reducing demineralization. A few small human trials and reviews have shown benefits from hydroxyapatite-containing toothpaste for enamel remineralization and caries prevention, but these often use synthetic hydroxyapatite rather than MCHC specifically. Overall, while there is a logical basis and some supportive data for the use of hydroxyapatite (including MCHC) in dental health, especially for enamel support, the evidence for oral supplementation with MCHC specifically for teeth is moderate and not as robust as for topical use.
