Rating (out of 5): 5

Fluorine, most commonly encountered in the form of fluoride, is scientifically validated for its role in supporting dental health. Extensive research demonstrates that fluoride helps to prevent dental caries (cavities) by enhancing the remineralization of tooth enamel and inhibiting the activity of cariogenic (cavity-causing) bacteria. Community water fluoridation, a practice that began in the mid-20th century, has been recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century due to its significant impact on reducing dental decay rates across populations.

Randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses have consistently shown that fluoride, whether delivered through water, toothpaste, or professional dental treatments, significantly reduces the incidence of dental caries in both children and adults. The American Dental Association (ADA), World Health Organization (WHO), and numerous dental and public health organizations worldwide endorse the use of fluoride for dental health.

While excessive fluoride intake can lead to dental fluorosis (a cosmetic discoloration of teeth) or, in rare cases, skeletal fluorosis, the levels used in dental products and water fluoridation are carefully regulated to avoid adverse effects. Overall, the use of fluoride is strongly supported by a robust body of scientific evidence for its effectiveness in supporting the health of the teeth and oral cavity.
