Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Fluoride is extensively used to support the teeth body system, specifically for the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay). The scientific basis for fluoride use is robust, with decades of research validating its efficacy. Fluoride works primarily by enhancing the remineralization of enamel and inhibiting the demineralization process. It also affects the metabolism of oral bacteria, reducing acid production that leads to tooth decay.

Numerous large-scale epidemiological studies have demonstrated significant reductions in dental caries following community water fluoridation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), American Dental Association (ADA), and many other reputable organizations endorse the use of fluoride in public water supplies and dental products such as toothpaste. The U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institutes of Health have also published strong recommendations based on systematic reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials.

While there has been some debate regarding optimal dosing and concerns over fluorosis (a cosmetic condition caused by excessive fluoride), the consensus remains that the controlled use of fluoride is both safe and highly effective in supporting dental health. This scientific validation is supported by over 70 years of use and research, making fluoride one of the most thoroughly studied interventions in preventive dentistry.
