Evidence supporting the use of: Phytocannabinoids
For the body system: Sympathetic Nervous System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Phytocannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are natural compounds found in the cannabis plant. There is a growing body of scientific research investigating their effects on the autonomic nervous system, including the sympathetic branch. Several preclinical and clinical studies indicate that phytocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system, which plays a modulatory role in stress responses, heart rate, blood pressure, and other sympathetic nervous system functions.
CBD, in particular, has been shown in some studies to reduce anxiety and modulate stress-induced sympathetic activation, leading to lowered heart rate and blood pressure in stressful situations. THC, on the other hand, can have variable effects, sometimes increasing sympathetic activity (such as heart rate) acutely, but with potential anxiolytic properties in some users. The mechanisms involve cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) distributed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which influence neurotransmitter release and autonomic regulation.
However, while laboratory and animal studies are promising, and some human trials demonstrate modulation of the sympathetic nervous system, the evidence is not yet robust enough to warrant a higher rating. More large-scale, well-controlled human studies are needed to fully understand efficacy, safety, and mechanisms. Therefore, the use of phytocannabinoids to support the sympathetic nervous system is scientifically plausible, with moderate but not conclusive evidence.
