Gastrodia elata, commonly known as Gastrodia, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is primarily employed to "calm the liver," "extinguish wind," and address ailments such as headaches, dizziness, and convulsions—symptoms that TCM often associates with disorders of nervous system regulation. While the modern concept of the sympathetic nervous system did not exist in traditional contexts, Gastrodia is sometimes interpreted as supportive of this system because of its reputed calming and anti-convulsant effects. Some contemporary herbalists extrapolate these traditional uses to suggest a modulatory impact on the autonomic nervous system, including the sympathetic branch. However, direct scientific evidence specifically validating Gastrodia's support for the sympathetic nervous system is limited. Most available research focuses on its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-epileptic properties, but these are not directly linked to sympathetic nervous system modulation. Thus, its use for this body system is rooted more in tradition and indirect interpretation than in rigorous scientific validation.
