Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Tripeptides—short chains of three amino acids—are being increasingly studied for their role in supporting wound healing and recovery after surgery. The scientific rationale hinges on the fact that peptides derived from collagen (notably hydrolyzed collagen tripeptides) can stimulate fibroblast proliferation, increase collagen synthesis, and promote angiogenesis, all of which are crucial for tissue repair. Several clinical trials and preclinical studies have shown that oral supplementation with collagen peptides, including tripeptides, can enhance skin elasticity, support wound closure, and may decrease healing time in surgical or traumatic wounds. For example, randomized controlled trials in surgical patients (e.g., those with pressure ulcers or postoperative wounds) have demonstrated improved healing rates and better outcomes when tripeptide-rich collagen supplements are used as adjuncts to standard care. However, while these findings are promising, the overall evidence quality is moderate—studies are often small, and there is variability in peptide formulations and dosing. Nevertheless, the mechanistic plausibility and emerging clinical data provide a reasonable scientific basis for the use of tripeptides to support surgical recovery, though further large-scale, well-designed trials are needed to firmly establish efficacy and optimal protocols.
