Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Proline is an amino acid that plays an important role in collagen synthesis, which is crucial for wound healing and tissue repair following surgery. Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissues, and proline is a key component of its structure. Scientific studies have demonstrated that adequate proline availability supports collagen formation and wound healing processes. Animal studies and some clinical observations suggest that supplemental proline, often as part of a mixture of amino acids, may aid in postoperative recovery by promoting tissue repair and reducing healing times. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for proline supplementation alone (outside of general protein or amino acid supplementation) specifically improving surgical healing outcomes is limited and not robust. Most recommendations for proline in surgical recovery are based on its known biochemical role and extrapolation from basic science, rather than large-scale randomized controlled trials. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for considering proline important to the healing process, the direct evidence for supplementation as a therapeutic intervention is modest, and it is usually addressed within the context of overall protein and amino acid nutritional support rather than as a stand-alone supplement.
