Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), also known as CCN2, is a matricellular protein that plays a significant role in wound healing and tissue repair. CTGF is not used as a direct supplement or drug in clinical practice, but its biological activity has been the focus of scientific research related to postoperative healing and tissue regeneration. Experimental studies, primarily in animal models and cell culture, have shown that CTGF is upregulated during the healing process after surgical injury and contributes to fibroblast proliferation, extracellular matrix production, and angiogenesis—all critical steps in wound healing.
Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that enhancing CTGF expression at wound sites can accelerate tissue repair and improve the quality of healing. Conversely, excessive CTGF activity is linked to fibrosis, so regulated expression is key. Some emerging therapies are exploring biomaterials or gene therapies that locally modulate CTGF levels to optimize healing after surgery, especially in cases where tissue regeneration is compromised (e.g., diabetic wounds or reconstructive surgery).
However, as of 2024, there are few if any approved pharmaceutical agents or supplements containing CTGF for human postoperative use. Most evidence is from laboratory or early-stage clinical research, and further trials are needed to confirm safety and efficacy in humans. Thus, the scientific validity is moderate, reflecting promising but not yet definitive evidence for its use in surgical healing.
