Evidence supporting the use of: Bisabolol
For the health condition: Sunburn
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bisabolol is a naturally occurring compound found primarily in chamomile (Matricaria recutita) and is widely used in cosmetic and dermatological formulations. Its use to support or treat sunburn is justified primarily by its anti-inflammatory, soothing, and skin-repairing properties, which have been demonstrated in several laboratory studies and small clinical trials.
Bisabolol has been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce skin irritation. Studies indicate that it can decrease erythema (redness) and support the skin’s natural healing process after exposure to irritants, including ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause sunburn. Additionally, bisabolol possesses antimicrobial properties, potentially protecting damaged skin from secondary infection. Its ability to enhance skin penetration of other ingredients is also beneficial in formulations designed for sunburn relief.
While the scientific evidence is promising, most studies are preclinical or involve small human trials, and there is a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating bisabolol’s efficacy for sunburn. Nevertheless, its inclusion in after-sun products and topical formulations is supported by its favorable safety profile and biologically plausible mechanisms of action. Therefore, the evidence supporting bisabolol’s use for sunburn can be considered moderate but not robust, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
