Evidence supporting the use of: Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC)
For the body system: Structural System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC) is a compound derived from whole bone, primarily from bovine sources, and contains natural calcium, phosphorus, collagen, and other bone matrix proteins. It is used as a dietary supplement to support the structural system, particularly bone health. Scientific support for MCHC is moderate. Several studies have evaluated its effects on bone mineral density, particularly in postmenopausal women and individuals with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Some clinical trials indicate that MCHC supplementation may slow bone loss and, in certain cases, improve bone density compared to calcium carbonate or placebo. The proposed mechanisms include the bioavailability of calcium and phosphorus, as well as the presence of bone matrix proteins that may enhance bone remodeling.
However, while MCHC shows promise, the quantity and quality of evidence are not as extensive as for other interventions such as bisphosphonates or vitamin D. Notably, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognizes the contribution of MCHC to the maintenance of normal bones due to its calcium and phosphorus content. Overall, the scientific evidence supports its use for the structural system, but findings are not uniformly robust, and further large-scale, long-term studies are needed to more definitively establish its efficacy.
