Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur-containing compound commonly used as a dietary supplement. Its application for supporting the structural system—encompassing joints, connective tissues, cartilage, and bones—is primarily based on both preclinical rationale and clinical studies, though evidence is moderate rather than definitive. MSM is believed to support the structural system by providing sulfur, which is important for collagen and keratin synthesis, key components of connective tissue and cartilage.

Several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials have investigated MSM's effectiveness, especially for joint health in osteoarthritis patients. Studies (e.g., Kim et al., Osteoarthritis Cartilage, 2006; Debbi et al., BMC Complement Altern Med, 2011) have shown that MSM supplementation can lead to reductions in pain and improvements in physical function compared to placebo. Additionally, MSM has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in laboratory and animal studies, which may contribute to its potential benefits in maintaining joint health and reducing exercise-induced muscle damage.
