Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eucommia ulmoides, commonly known as the hardy rubber tree or "du zhong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting the body's structural system, particularly the bones, joints, and connective tissues. In TCM, Eucommia bark is traditionally used to "tonify the liver and kidneys"—organs believed to govern the health of bones and tendons. Classical herbal texts describe its use in addressing lower back pain, joint weakness, stiffness, and to promote the healing of tendons and bones, especially after injuries. The rationale comes from the traditional framework that associates the herb with strengthening the 'Kidney' system, which is linked to skeletal health in TCM philosophy.

Scientific research is still emerging. Some preclinical studies suggest that Eucommia extracts may have beneficial effects on bone metabolism, such as stimulating osteoblast (bone-forming cell) activity, inhibiting bone resorption, and modulating collagen synthesis. These effects are attributed to compounds like lignans, iridoids, and flavonoids. However, most of this evidence comes from animal or cell studies, with limited clinical trials in humans.

In summary, while there is a strong tradition of using Eucommia ulmoides for structural system support, especially bone and joint health, robust scientific validation in humans remains limited. The evidence rating is moderate due to the traditional use and some promising early scientific findings.
