Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Almond oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine and skincare, including the prevention and treatment of stretch marks (striae gravidarum). Its popularity is largely based on anecdotal evidence and its role as a massage oil for pregnant women. Almond oil is rich in vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants, which are believed to help moisturize the skin, improve elasticity, and reduce irritation. Despite these traditional uses, robust scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of almond oil in preventing or treating stretch marks is limited.

Some small studies and clinical observations have suggested that regular massage with almond oil during pregnancy may reduce the incidence or severity of stretch marks, but these effects are often attributed as much to the act of massage as to the oil itself. Systematic reviews and controlled trials have not established almond oil as superior to other oils or placebo. For example, a 2012 randomized controlled trial found no significant difference in stretch mark prevention between women using almond oil and those in the control group. Overall, while almond oil is safe for topical use and continues to be used in various cultures, its efficacy for stretch marks is not strongly supported by scientific research.
