Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B6 (pridoxal 5-phosphate)
For the health condition: Stress
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B6, particularly in its active form pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), is sometimes used as a supplement to support stress or stress-related symptoms. There is some scientific rationale for this use, primarily because vitamin B6 acts as a cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), all of which play roles in mood regulation and stress response. Low levels of vitamin B6 have been associated in observational studies with depressive symptoms and increased psychological stress. Some clinical trials suggest that supplementation with B vitamins, including B6, may have modest effects on mood and stress, especially in individuals with suboptimal baseline levels. However, the evidence is mixed and not robust; meta-analyses and systematic reviews generally report limited or inconsistent benefits for vitamin B6 alone in reducing stress or improving mood in healthy adults. The majority of studies use B6 in combination with other B vitamins, making it difficult to isolate its specific effects. Overall, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some preliminary evidence, the scientific support for using vitamin B6 (PLP) specifically to treat or support stress is limited, and its efficacy has not been conclusively demonstrated in high-quality, large-scale clinical trials.
