Vitamin B3 (niacin, nicotinamide) is sometimes promoted for stress support, largely due to its general role in energy metabolism and nervous system function. However, scientific evidence directly supporting its use in stress management is limited. Some small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that B vitamins, as part of a complex, may help reduce stress symptoms, but there is a lack of high-quality, large-scale clinical trials confirming a specific benefit of vitamin B3 for stress. The theoretical rationale stems from the fact that stress can increase metabolic demands and potentially lead to depletion of certain nutrients, including B vitamins. Severe vitamin B3 deficiency (pellagra) can cause neuropsychiatric symptoms, but such deficiency is rare in developed countries. Most research focuses on broader B-complex supplementation rather than isolated B3, and findings are often mixed or show only modest effects. Therefore, while vitamin B3 is essential for overall health, its use specifically to support or treat stress is only weakly supported by scientific evidence at this time.
