Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu) has a longstanding presence in traditional East Asian medicine, where various citrus peels and extracts are used for their purported calming and mood-stabilizing effects. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the dried peel of related citrus fruits, such as Chenpi (from tangerines or mandarins), is employed to "regulate Qi" and is sometimes included in formulations intended to relieve symptoms associated with stress, such as digestive discomfort and mild mood disturbances. However, specific references to Satsuma mandarin being used directly for stress are limited, and much of the traditional evidence is extrapolated from the use of similar citrus species. Scientific validation for Satsuma mandarin’s effects on stress is minimal. Some preliminary research has investigated citrus essential oils (including those from Satsuma and closely related mandarins) for their potential anxiolytic and mood-modulating properties, often focusing on aromatherapy. These studies are generally small, use animal models, or are not specific to Satsuma mandarin. The active compounds, such as limonene and linalool, have demonstrated mild relaxing effects in preclinical settings, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. In summary, the use of Satsuma mandarin for supporting or treating stress is primarily justified by tradition, with only weak or indirect scientific support. Its use for stress should be viewed as traditional rather than evidence-based.
