Eleutherococcus senticosus, commonly known as Siberian ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Russia and East Asia, for supporting the body during periods of stress. In modern times, it is often classified as an "adaptogen," a term used for herbs that purportedly help the body adapt to physical and mental stress. Several clinical studies have investigated its efficacy for stress-related outcomes. While some small trials and animal studies suggest that Eleutherococcus senticosus may reduce subjective feelings of fatigue and improve certain cognitive and physiological responses to stress, the overall quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, methodological flaws, and inconsistent results.
A 2010 systematic review (Liao et al., 2010, Phytotherapy Research) concluded that while there is some evidence suggesting Eleutherococcus may have anti-fatigue and stress-modulating effects, robust, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking. The purported mechanisms involve modulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and antioxidant activity, but these are primarily demonstrated in preclinical models. Consequently, its use for stress is supported by both tradition and some scientific studies, but the scientific validation remains preliminary and not definitive.
