Corktree, often referring to Phellodendron amurense (Amur corktree), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, the bark of the corktree—known as Huang Bai—is used for its purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and calming properties. Traditionally, it has been included in herbal formulas aimed at reducing "heat," supporting liver function, and sometimes addressing symptoms that overlap with what might now be labeled as "stress," such as irritability or restlessness. However, the connection between corktree bark and stress specifically is largely inferential and based on its broader traditional use for calming the body and mind, rather than on direct evidence of anxiolytic or adaptogenic effects.

Scientific studies on corktree bark have mostly focused on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic effects, with some research into its possible impact on cortisol or stress pathways in animal models. However, robust clinical studies in humans directly evaluating its effect on psychological stress are lacking.
